Burrell triple strike keeps Swallows top
Swallows’ chokehold on the women’s A league tightened last weekend as they picked up another shutout against Wildcats, 5-0.
Jenny Burrell was on fire on offence and secured her hat-trick within the first eight minutes.
Burrell first hit the mark with just one minute on the clock and followed up in the fourth and eighth minutes. All three goals came in open play.
Swallows then relaxed on that scoreline until midway through the second half when Liz Hartley added a fourth goal.
Jenny Chattock put away a short corner in the dying minutes to seal the win.
In the other A league match, Swifts pulled out a 3-2 win over Canaries.
Swifts went first on the board as Keishae Robinson converted a short-corner routine in the fifth minute of play.
Canaries came back with an equaliser, also from a short-corner, courtesy of Mary-Ellen Jackson.
Canaries then doubled up before the half-time break on another successful short-corner, this time off the stick of Georgi Drover.
But Swifts fought back for the win in the second half, with Jasmine Patterson finding the touch on a short-corner and Robinson hitting her second strike in open play minutes before the whistle.
Swallows have a comfortable ten-point lead in the standings over nearest rival Ravens who stand at 22 points. Canaries sit in third place with 14 points, followed by Wildcats and Swifts, both at eight points.
Meanwhile in B league play, Ravens picked up six points with their two wins of the weekend. They smashed Canaries 7-0 on Sunday after shutting out Cardinals 3-0 the day before.
Jessica Hollis, Anna Heard and Rachael Beasley were the goal-scorers against Cardinals. On Sunday against Canaries, Heard scored two, Emma Norman also scored twice, and Emma Turner, Liz Gardner and Alex Wheatley added a goal each.
Swifts and Bluebirds played to a 4-4 draw. Liz Wright and Eva Dillas contributed two goals each for Bluebirds while Milan Wall-Burgess and Keishae Robinson each scored for Swifts and Jasmine Patterson added the other two.
Wildcats collected a 3-0 win over Swallows despite playing short-handed. Brittni DaSilva, Carmen Adebiyi and Alecia Holder were the goal-scorers.
Ravens are leading the B league with 45 points, followed by Swifts at 41, Bluebirds at 26, Swallows at 23, Wildcats at 16, Cardinals at 15 and Canaries with 9.
