Cardinals turn things around
After a long losing streak, Cardinals B squad reversed their fortunes by picking up two back-to-back wins last weekend.
Cards picked up their first win of the season over Canaries on Saturday.
This match was a scoreless draw for the first 54 minutes of play, but Cardinals Laura Robinson managed to break the deadlock with an open-play goal to secure the win.
Having lost five games and tied two, the win was a welcome one for the struggling squad, the A team of which collapsed at the end of last year.
And Cardinals rode the momentum to another win on Sunday over Swallows, 2-1.
Again it was Robinson that put Cards first on the board with an open-play goal, this time in the first nine minutes of play.
Swallows battled to an equaliser in the second half when Annaka Rubidge successfully converted on a short corner routine.
But seven minutes later, Cardinals too converted a short corner — with Wendy Cassidy finding the touch — to seal away their second win.
Picking up six points over the weekend has vaulted Cards to fifth place in the league but if their winning streak continues they are in good position to move up as they have two games in hand.
Swallows B suffered another loss, 1-0 at the hands of Bluebirds on the weekend.
Liz Wright scored the lone goal for the win.
Meanwhile Wildcats and Ravens drew 1-1 with Rachael Beasley scoring for Ravens and Alecia Holder finding the late equaliser for Wildcats. In the final B match, on Monday evening Canaries collected their first win of the season, 3-2 over Bluebirds.
Ellen Reoch and Liz Wright took Bluebirds to an early 2-0 lead but Canaries battled back with three goals from Fiona Correia, Fiona Doe and Georgie Drover for the win.
Ravens lead the B league with 26 points, however, they have played 11 games.
Swifts are sitting in second place with 21 points but have only played nine games to date. Bluebirds and Swallows are tied at 17 points each, trailed by Cards at 8, Wildcats at 8 and Canaries with five points.
In the lone A match of the weekend, Ravens and Wildcats mired in a 1-1 draw.
Emma Simmons put Ravens up first but Tracey McPhee spared Wildcats the loss with her 67th minute on-target strike.
In Men’s play, an on-fire Mark Finnigan led Chameleons to an 8-4 victory over Upstarts by netting an impressive five goals.
Neil Mountford, Jonathan Dodd and Justin Freisenbruch each chipped in one towards Chameleons’ final tally.
Gary Tavares netted two for Upstarts while Donnie Moniz and Phil Trussel added one each.
And Rebels collected a 2-1 win over Polecats.
Polecats went on the board early as Simon Farrington put away a goal in the eighth minute but Neil Honess found the equaliser before the half-time break.Honess was back again late in the second half to secure the win for Rebels.
