Youth Library to explore Ghana's culture

Bermudian students will be exposed to another culture and community, which makes up the Island, this Saturday.

The Bermuda Youth Library will be exploring Ghana as the fifth stop in their Read Around the World Series.

This is the second time the series has been held at the Youth Library, the first was in 2000, and it has featured five countries so far including the Philippines, Italy, Portugal, India and Egypt.

Marla Smith, the Youth Librarian, said: "We were asked about the incident where the Portuguese man was beaten up and there was a lot of talk about diversity so we decided to revive the series."

Read Around the World, is directed towards students between the ages of seven and 12, but Ms. Smith said a few six year olds have signed up and attend with their parents.

Members of the featured community come to the library to showcase their country by telling the students about where it's located, the festivals and the customs.

Food from the countries is also served during the featured series and there is a question and answer period following the presentation.

Ms. Smith added: "Sometimes the kids are timid, but as they get started they always have a lot of questions.

"This past Saturday, they asked about the woman's dress, which she explained was because she was Muslim so the kids then had questions about her religion and practices.

"Afterwards, the children can take out books about the country."

The next 'destination' in the Read Around the World Series is on Saturday, March 24 from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m., tickets are $5 and those interested are asked to book ahead of time because registration is required.
