Gazette reports hacking to Police
The Royal Gazette has contacted the Police over repeated attacks on its website by computer hackers.
The site, www.theroyalgazette.com, crashed on several occasions Thursday and yesterday due to the problem, known as a "denial of service" attack.
If convicted the culprit could face up to five years in prison and $20,000 in fines.
Editor of The Royal Gazette Bill Zuill expressed disappointment that the website has been tampered with during the final days of the General Election campaign, when readers are keen for the latest news.
He said last night: "We don't know who is behind it and it would be dangerous to speculate, but we do think it originates locally because it would be hard to see why a hacker outside Bermuda would have an interest in doing this. It's clearly depriving Bermudians at home and abroad from the right to be fully informed on the issues of the day, and that's deeply disturbing."
He urged readers who have experienced problems accessing the site: "Bear with us, we're doing everything we can."
