Ferry pilot failed alcohol test
Investigations are underway after a pilot at the helm of a ferry that slammed into a dock on Friday, was arrested for failing an alcohol breath test.
At around 6 p.m., fast ferry Cecil B. Smith collided with the Rockaway ferry dock in Southampton, resulting in "extensive" damage to the dock as well as damage to the ferry.
There were passengers on board, however, no one was injured, Police said.
Additionally, the vessel took on minor damage to a bow railing.
Following the accident, officers turned up at the Hamilton ferry terminal to question the 37-year-old pilot, a Sandys parish man.
They subsequently arrested him on suspicion of impaired driving, took him to the Hamilton Police Station and detained him after he failed the alco-analyser test.
One passenger told The Royal Gazette: "I think the ferry is going to have a big dent in the front, it hit pretty hard.
"Luckily most people were sitting down!"
The accident comes after the ferry Serenity slammed into a Dockyard wharf in September, after also attempting to dock.
Government has yet to release the findings of their investigation into that crash, which resulted in considerable damage and numerous non life-threatening injuries, despite repeated inquiries by The Royal Gazette.
Last night a Government spokeswoman said an internal investigation would be conducted into the latest matter and did not rule out the possibility of the pilot being fired.
