Fourth time lucky
Maureen O'Berg and Ron Groff remembered the saying "third time lucky but the fourth time a charm" when they upset the second seeded and favoured pair of Janet Green and Earl Leader 6-1, 7-5 in the semi-final of the BLTC Invitational Tournament at the Coral Beach and Tennis Club yesterday.
It was the first victory over the highly acclaimed perennial Century Mixed Doubles champions in four tries. Green wasn't at her usual best and on the day Leader was not able to steady the ship with the aggressive Groff complimenting the steady play of O'Berg. The victors will now face top seeds Gill Butterfield and Brian Way in today's final.
Green will still have a chance at a BLTC crown today when she teams with her conqueror, O'Berg, to take on Ann Beatty and Colleen Keenan in the Ladies' 50 Doubles Final while Butterfield and Way earned their passage to the final somewhat more easily when they defeated Ann Prosser and Rich Nelson in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Richfield, Connecticut resident Ann Beatty continued her successful run as a newcomer to the local tennis scene when she captured her first title, and the second in her family, when she defeated Diane Copeland 6-1, 6-4 to win the Ladies 60 Singles title.
For Beatty and her husband Walter they now have one title each, but Mrs. Beatty will have the opportunity to go one up on her husband today when she teams with Colleen Keenan against Janet Green and Maureen O'Berg in the Ladies 50 Doubles final.
In possibly the day's biggest surprise the hard-hitting combination of Stuart Smith and Brian Way took less than 90 minutes on their way to the Men's 55 doubles title when they eased past David Lambert and Eldon Daniels 6-3, 6-1.
