Bromby gunning for Games berth
It will be a case of do or die for Olympic hopeful Peter Bromby and crew Lee White who begin competing at the 2008 Star Worlds in Biscayne Bay, Florida today.
Bromby, a veteran of four Olympic Games, needs to finish no lower than fourth in Miami over the next week in order to qualify for this year's Games to be held in Beijing, China in August.
The veteran skipper is wary the task ahead of him is a daunting one.
"It is not going to be easy getting one of those four spots," Bromby said prior to flying to Miami last week.
This week's Worlds, which consists of all but one of the top 20 ranked Star Class teams in the world, will be hosted by Miami's Coral Reef Yacht Club where Bromby is confident he can qualify for the Games with the last throw of the dice.
"I think we have a shot, but I also think it is going to be a tough battle, to be quite honest," he said. "A lot of the guys who want one of those four spots have been down in Miami all winter training and racing.
"There are about 21 countries who will be fighting it out for one of those four spots. The way I look at it is that there are seven countries who have a very good chance of getting into the Games, and we are one of them."
