Hemp's second half-century in vain
Bermuda 281 and 178
Kenya 302 and 161-2
Bermuda's Intercontinental Cup losing streak continued in Nairobi yesterday as the Islanders slumped to a crushing eight-wicket defeat against hosts Kenya on the fourth and final day at the Gymkhana Cricket Club.
The Kenyans resumed their second innings yesterday morning at 79 without loss requiring a further 79 runs for a victory that was eventually secured in the 38th over thanks to aggressive half-centuries from openers Maurice Ouma (63) and David Obuya (70) that carried the hosts to the brink of a convincing win.
Bermuda Under-19 skipper Rodney Trott (one for 36) and vice-captain Malachi Jones (one for 20) led the Island's attack that was always faced with the daunting task of trying to defend a modest total against their hosts' tall batting order.
That the Kenyans prevailed owed much to Bermuda's dismal batting display on the third day after falling behind 21 runs in first innings arrears. Bermuda were pegged down from the outset after losing opener Jekon Edness (nought) to a 'King's Pair' and were never able to come to grips with a turning wicket that was ruthlessly exploited by the spin duo of Henry Varaiya (five for 77) and James Kamande (three for 64) who shared eight wickets between them after the Islanders had quickly slumped to 15 for two.
Fellow opener Azeem Pitcher (six), number three Rodney Trott (five) and number five James Celestine (seven) all went cheaply to put pressure on their team-mates lower down the order, with Glamorgan skipper David Hemp - who stroked a watchful 97 in the first innings - again leading the resistance with an unbeaten half-century before eventually running out of partners.
Bermuda's first five batsmen were all back in the pavilion with only 60 runs on the board. And despite Hemp's battling efforts the tourists never really recovered as wickets fell at regular intervals around the stylish left hander who gathered 68 from a 122-ball knock that contained eight boundaries.
Hemp also added 53 runs for the ninth wicket, the highest stand of the innings, along with tailender Kevin Hurdle who thumped 30 off 33 deliveries.
Skipper Irving Romaine (17), all-rounder Janeiro Tucker (13) and young Jones (21) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures for the Islanders, who will meet United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their second Intercontinental Cup match on tour in Dubai starting on Thursday in Sharjah.
Hurdle's first innings wicket haul of four for 98 and left-arm spinner Dwayne Leverock's four for 113 off 40 overs, with 11 maidens, kept Bermuda in the hunt on the third day after half-centuries from brothers David and Collins Obuya, who both hit 53, and Thomas Odoyo (73) saw the Kenyans threaten to run away with the match.
Hurdle, who captained club side Social Club to its first Premier Division title earlier this year, exploited the new ball which was taken early on Saturday and in Leverock found a good ally. But the pair's efforts were undermined as the Islanders came unglued at the crease in their second innings to give the Kenyans the momentum needed to go onto victory.
