Under starter's orders for Fort Knox Challenge

THE Bermuda Electric Sports Club has picked up a major sponsor, Fort Knox Bermuda, for one of its biggest races of the season. It has sponsored Sunday's race (2 p.m.) dubbed the Fort Knox Challenge, which will pit more than a dozen of the island's top enthusiasts battling it out for the firm's coveted trophy. Troy Symonds, CEO of Fort Knox Bermuda, was elated to be involved in the first biannual Fort Knox Challenge.

"We have attempted to be supportive of the sport and my son also enjoys it. When Wendell Daniels, the club's spokesman and race organiser, proposed the idea to me, I was all for it. The club is based at the Pembroke Community Club and PCC is very dear to my heart.

"I like to participate in anything that promotes harmony within the community and I didn't realise how big the sport was both locally and internationally. What I really like about the club is the involvement within the community. It is a healthy outlet, good competition and drug free. That is really encouraging to see and some of the guys there are second-generation enthusiasts."

Richard Smith, PCC's vice-president, also gave his blessing when the idea of the biannual race came to fruition.

"The club is very active and I have dropped by on a few occasions and they are well organised. I have encouraged Wendell to use the facility and the club has had several events and things have moved along smoothly.

"They have definitely offered a positive outlet not only for the youth in the community but throughout the island."

Mr. Daniels explained the rigorous guidelines the racers must adhere to when selecting a motor for Sunday's event, which is limited to a '19-turn' motor.

"A 19 Spec Race is a race where all of the competitors have a similar electric motor that has an armature (inside part of the motor) that has 19 turns of copper wire around it. This makes all of the motors in this series compatible as far as performance is concerned. The whole idea of this race is to have a competition where motor performance between races is not an issue. Even though most of the races are using different make motors, they're all comparable in performance."

The drivers are: Trey Wade, KyJuan Simmons, Sidkai Tavares, Dean Jones, Dennis Pearman, Lloyd Evans, Aaron DeShields, Ricky Wade, Quincy Aberdeen, Bernard Wade, Winston Thomas, Norvell Wright and Wendell Daniels.
