Confusion as Bascome reaches MISL milestone

When David Bascome realised he?d secured his 1,000th point in the Major Indoor Soccer League, he was actually sitting on the bench at the 1st Mariner Arena.

The 15-year veteran of the indoor game began the season with 997 and reached the milestone with a goal and two assists in last weekend?s victory over the St. Louis Steamers.

But the first goal he set up for his team was announced as ?unassisted? over the PA and it was only after watching the video replay that the mistake was corrected, making his assist for Robbie Aristodemo the milestone point.

?There was a bit of confusion because they hadn?t recorded my first assist,? said the Baltimore Blast midfielder.

?But once they realised what had happened they announced it straight away but I had just come off so I was sitting on the bench at the time.

?It was nice to get it out the way though, and it was nice that players from both teams came over and congratulated me.

?I knew I was close at the beginning of the season and I didn?t want it hanging over me for too long.?

Bascome has enjoyed some great moments in his 15 years in the game with Harrisburg, Denver and now the Blast, but despite five All-Star appearances, there is just one undoubted highlight for him.

?It has to be winning the championship,? said Bascome, referring to his win with the Blast in 2003.

?I had to wait 13 years to do it but I finally got there and it was an incredible feeling. Winning the overall prize has to be the greatest achievement, because winning is what it is all about.

?And that is something I want to do again. I probably have this year and then one more year left and if I could get a championship before I retire from the playing side that would really top off of my career.

?I think probably just one more year after this is about right. I have dropped back into midfield the last couple of years and that is a more demanding role. You have to attack and defend but I do enjoy being in the thick of things.?

And Bascome?s greatest goal ? and there have been more than 440 of them ? came from that championship-winning season.

?It was the third game of the play-offs against Milwaukee, I was having problems with my knee and it was heavily strapped,? said the veteran, who hopes to set up a professional league here in 2007.

?It was one of those games where I probably shouldn?t have played but I vowed to myself and my team-mates that I would. And I went on there and I scored a vital goal for us.

?It was a great feeling because I had been determined to get in there and make a difference and even though I was playing hurt I could hold my head up and say I did my bit, I played my part.?

Bascome?s side are 2-0 so far this season and he is already looking forward to the upcoming clashes with the Philadelphia KiXX and fellow Bermudian John Barry Nusum.

?John?s side got the better of us last year so we will be looking to set the record straight,? added the 35-year-old.

?I have heard he believes this could be a championship year for his side but we feel the same and I am looking forward to our matches.

?John is a good player, a very good player and I wish him the best of luck.?
