Somerset's lights 'unsafe'
Bermuda may suffer a soccer 'bottleneck' later this season after Somerset Cricket Club was forced to pull out of hosting night games.
Bermuda Football Association announced yesterday that the west end venue would not be available due to problems with their floodlighting system.
The ground had been scheduled to hold two night games between PHC and Wolves Girls in the women's division and PHC and Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday night.
But the lighting problems means those matches have now been moved to Sunday..
"Somerset Cricket Club has informed the Association that their lighting system is not safe enough to use," a BFA statement said yesterday. "Their Executive Committee made a decision to suspend all night games arranged at their grounds indefinitely."
The decision means that there are only three venues available for night matches this season - BAA Field, Devonshire Rec., and St John's Field.
Pembroke Hamilton Club in Warwick used to host floodlit games up to about three seasons ago. But they experienced their own problems with lighting and decided to close down the ground while the whole area was renovated. The venue remains closed to this day.
Last night BFA president, Larry Mussenden, said despite the problems he was sure adequate arrangements would be made to take account of them.
"We may be looking at perhaps a bottleneck or some difficulties down the road but I know that with the dedication of clubs like BAA and Devonshire Rec. that we will be able to get through the programme as best as we can," he said.
