Goater in dilemma over summer soccer school
Shaun Goater says he may have to consider his future involvement in his popular summer soccer school in Bermuda.
The Island star, currently one of England's hottest strikers, says commitment to his club, Manchester City, has meant he has only made a brief appearance at the clinics he runs with fellow star David Bascome over the past couple of years.
The pair set up the school about 10 years ago, but Goater said he had been able to spend less and less time on the Island during the summer and parents had begun to express their concerns.
Goater said he was "gutted" but would have to seriously think over the situation in the next couple of weeks.
"The kids want me to be there and I am not there for the full duration of the camp," said Goater.
"Parents have voiced their concerns to the Bank of Bermuda, who are one of the main sponsors, so I have had to sit down and talk with them and David Bascome as to my participation during the summer.
"It is wrong of me to say I will be there and then only be there for a day. It is not fair to the kids."
Goater said he hoped an amicable resolution could be found.
"I am at this real difficult point. I have always wanted to be involved with the camp, but it is unfair of me to do so if I am having to return early because of my job," he said.
"I am in discussions with the Bank to see if there is any kind of compromise we can come to.
"I am gutted because I started this 10 years ago and I never foresaw this sort of situation. I always thought it would continue. That is why I have got to decide over the next couple of weeks."
Goater said it was a project in which he had an immense amount of pride.
"It is something that David and I started on our own and as it has grown we have got people like the Bank of Bermuda to help us become as big as we are today," he said. "So it is not an easy decision to just say `No, I am not going to be involved again.' It is not that simple.
"I am hoping that it can continue in some shape or form but I am just being open and honest with the people who enrol so that they are clear about my situation."
