Kris at a crossroads
This year has been one of change for Kris Hedges ? and there may be more on the horizon for the Island?s top cyclist.
Now in Bermuda to compete in the CD&P Bermuda Grand Prix, the 24-year-old hinted that he may be moving on from the French cycling team, VC Pontivy, after just one season.
While nothing is settled, Hedges yesterday expressed uncertainty about his future but indicated he would soon decide.
?Right now I?m looking at options and teams and what I want to do with my life and with my sport. We?ll see in the next couple weeks,? he said.
The pro rider is likely to remain in France though, adding there is the possibility he would at some point return to the USA where he was previously based.
The Bermudian acknowledged that moving to Europe, which he described as ?the hotbed of cycling?, was a huge adjustment but ?definitely a worthwhile experience?; one which he is clearly not ready to abandon despite a seesaw season.
?It?s definitely a big change to move on and ride in Europe. In France, there?s a lot less criterium-style racing which is what we have here in the Grand Prix
?In France you have a lot more Point-A-to-Point-B courses, 160k or 180k road races. You end in a town and then you do a few laps for the crowds there.
?That?s the basic format. You do have a few races like that in the USA but doing them three or four times a week now, that?s a different story.
?It?s a very different style of racing which I was adapting to pretty well but this year I had a lot of ups and downs, a number of crashes and setbacks in that regard.?
The most recent problem was a broken collarbone which sidelined Hedges for almost a month, only allowing him to restart training in early August in preparation for the Grand Prix and the Caribbean Games.
Ready to put his injury woes as well as the disappointment of not having done anything spectacular behind him ? despite some ?decent rides? ? Hedges is looking forward to giving his compatriots much to shout about over the weekend.
Sporting a new long-haired look, he said: ?I?m looking for a good performance at Grand Prix. I?m really hoping to put on a good show.?
