Goater still has point to prove
After netting nine goals in seven outings and being the leading scorer in his division you would think there was little Shaun Goater had to prove to his manager.
But the Bermudian striker doesn't believe that.
Goater hit a pair at the weekend in the 3-0 win over Birmingham City and he'll be looking to impress boss Kevin Keegan still further tonight when the Blues take on Coventry.
"This is the first time I have worked with Kevin Keegan and I still feel in every game that I have to show him what Shaun Goater is about," he said.
"I don't want him to think `he is not the one for me and I will have to go and buy another player. I am sure all the other players think the same when they reflect on their positions because everyone here wants to keep their shirts."
Although Goater continued his impressive scoring streak at the weekend, it is a measure of the player that he was not satisfied with just two goals after 90 minutes.
"I had two good opportunities, as well as the goals, but made the wrong decision," he said. "As a striker I am always greedy and in the previous two games I didn't really get too many chances.
"The boss has shown he is not going to just sit there and let players settle in. He has the finances and he has proved that he will go out and get quality players."
City make the trek to the Midlands tonight to face a Coventry side who have seen manager Gordon Strachan walk through the exit door and Roland Nilsson walk in the other way.
Relegated from the top flight with City, they had been expected to among the leaders from the off. However, they have had a woeful start and are hoping the change at the helm will help turn the club's fortunes around.
Goater said he just hoped any improvement didn't come against his side and he was keen to take City's impressive home form on the road.
"My concerns are away from home, whether Paulo (Wanchope) and I can show the same passion to want the ball and get on the end of it," he said.
"It is the same for the midfielders, can they dominate away from home? It is (a question of) whether we can show what we showed against Birmingham at Maine Road when we go on our travels, that is the challenge for us.
"We have to put it right. As the gaffer has said, we are inconsistent."
