Cycling Grand Prix hit by only one withdrawal
Only one team has pulled out of this week's CD&P Cycling Grand Prix in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the USA.
Sporting events across the world have been hit by the atrocities committed in New York, Washington and Pittsburgh with many participants opting not to travel both because of the difficulty in getting to venues and also because of fear of further incidents.
However, Bermuda's national cycling coach Greg Hopkins said the weekend's racing had been largely unaffected by the events.
"Hot Toobs have decided not to travel," said Hopkins. "That is the only team in the men's pro one and two category (to pull out) so we still have field of 50 riders for the event which is pretty good."
Hopkins said he fully understood the team's decision to give the race a miss.
"It is disappointing that they can't come but I guess it is something that we had to anticipate. I don't think it is necessarily connected with the difficulty in getting here because they were not supposed to be arriving until late in the week anyway. I guess they have just decided for whatever reason that they don't want to travel," he said.
Female rider Anne Samplonius, last year's victor, has also decided to pull out, but Hopkins said the event's main draws, US Postal riders, George Hincapie, Tyler Hamilton and Dylan Casey, would all be on the Island.
