Trophy bonanza as Stars and Town steal the show
It might not be the main priority, but somebody is soon going to have to invest in a new trophy cabinet at St. John?s Road.
Trophies galore have arrived there in recent months with both the Western Stars cricket team and Dandy Town football team reaping the benefits of years of hard work on and off the pitch.
Stars didn?t lose there until the penultimate game of their impressive summer, Dandy Town also managed to go the same length of time without a defeat ? and four trophies are now waiting for a cabinet in which to be placed.
Hasan Durham?s Western Stars picked up the Belco Cup and the one-day league, which was the least they could do considering Lionel Furbert?s men had already sent Dandy Town to the summit of domestic soccer with league and FA Cup victories.
Friendly rivalry between the two sides, who now operate as one multi-sports club, inspires multiple trophy-winning as one looks to outdo the other, although both club skippers will admit that their members do turn out to support the other sides? achievements ? even if the days of players turning out at the top level for both clubs are over.
Thanks to new sponsorship from AT&T Wireless, prize money is now available for winners of football and cricket, with the club deciding to split the prize money 60-40 between the team that wins the money and the sports club in general.
The cricket winnings will be invested in astroturf practice wickets with the club portion of the cash going towards work on the clubhouse.
?I don?t know what it is exactly, but things are coming together brilliantly for the club,? said Durham, whose side recorded an impressive season ahead of the changing of the guard which will see them lose stalwart Albert Steede and lean more heavily on youth for future success.
?There is a great atmosphere down there and things are run well from the top and it has translated into success on the pitch for us. The football lads had a great year so there was a bit of pressure on us ? we sort of had to win those trophies or we would never have heard the end of it.?
Furbert, whose football team almost tossed away the league with a rare home defeat to Southampton Rangers with the champagne already on ice, shared the enthusiasm about St. John?s Road?s sport.
?We had a great year and are looking forward to more of the same this time around,? said the diminutive captain, who has spent 18 years playing with the club at various levels.
?A good youth programme has done us no harm and there is a strong family atmosphere around the club. It is a nice place to play and that has been reflected in our performances.?
Despite the on-field success, club president Cal Blankendal admits that there is one over-riding issue that has consistently plagued the club ? a lack of corporate sponsorship.
?Club sponsorship in sport normally comes from success,? said Blankendal matter-of-factly.
?Our teams, both of them, keep winning and keep appearing on the front page of The Royal Gazette sports section. Their names and pictures are all over the place but we are still struggling to get sponsors involved.
?We are obviously doing all the right things on the pitch and we are certainly doing our bit in the community, but still people don?t seem to be interested.
?It is a shame really. There are plenty of projects we would like to undertake around the ground to improve things but that is what we are going to need cash and sponsorship for ? I?d like to think with all our sporting success somebody might want to come forward.?
A trophy cabinet, he added, would be nice but was not his main concern.
