Golfer Sims bounces back

Bermudian Michael Sims rebounded from a disastrous second round to finish the Captain's Open (Port) with a respectable third round of two-under 70 yesterday in the USA, writes Gayle Alleyne.

"I tried to get a good swing going and just be patient and try to hit some good shots because I didn't hit very many - if I hit any at all - yesterday (Thursday)," said the rookie pro following the end of the New England Pro Tour event.

On Thursday, Sims carded a bizarre nine-over 81 at the Cape Cod, Massachusetts, par-72 course. His first round was the same as the third to leave him at five-over 221 for the tournament which was won by overnight leader Ryan Ouellette with a score of six-under.

Sims (23) said his putting was just "so, so" yesterday though he did hit the ball "a lot better".

"I just need a couple good days of practice," he surmised, adding that he will play a practice round with another Bermudian golfer, Dwayne Pearman, tomorrow.

The two will practice at The International in Massachusetts ahead of the New England Open which takes place there next Tuesday to Thursday. Thereafter, Sims heads west to California to try qualifying for successive Buy.Com tournaments - the State Farm Open and the Monterey Peninsula Classic.
