Under-20s outplayed by classy Jamaicans

Bermuda?s Under-20 soccer side were swept aside 3-0 by hosts Jamaica on Wednesday night in the final group match at the Caribbean Zone World Cup qualification tournament.

Requiring an eight-goal victory to replace Jamaica at the top of the group ? after the Reggae Boyz had crushed Antigua 12-0 two days previously ? Kenny Thompson?s young charges were always fighting a losing battle at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.

Jamaica, who now move on to the knockout round to face Haiti in a home and away tie, were clearly the better side throughout the 90 minutes and it was only through a series of desperate goal-line clearances that the margin of defeat was not considerably larger.

The hosts opened the scoring early in the first half through Kemar Munroe, whose apparently harmless free kick from the left hand touch line sailed over ?keeper Daniel Johnson and into the net.

With Bermuda struggling to cope with the superior pace and penetration of their opponents, Jamaica notched a second goal just before half-time as Akeem Priestly drilled home from close range after a mesmerising build-up on the left hand side between Luton Shelton and Monroe.

Shelton was again in the thick of the action on the hour mark when, after rounding his marker, he crashed a shot against an upright while minutes later he had an effort cleared off the line by a retreating defender, with the keeper beaten.

Although Bermuda huffed and puffed, there was little they could do to prevent wave after wave of opposition assaults upon their goal.

And in the dying seconds, O?Brian White put the result beyond doubt with a calm finish under the advancing Johnson, having been delightfully put through on goal by substitute Richard West.

Afterwards, coach Thompson was prepared to concede that despite their best efforts, Bermuda had been ?outclassed? in every department by a team containing several players who are on the cusp of making their full senior international debuts.

Bermuda leave the Caribbean with a record of played three, won one and lost two.

The side suffered a 2-0 loss to St.Lucia last Saturday before bouncing back with a narrow 2-1 victory over Antigua on Wednesday.
