Island team go down fighting
Final day results pushed Bermuda back into fifth place at the Junior Caribbean Team Squash Championships in Barbados over the weekend as both the boys and girls' teams suffered narrow 2-3 defeats.
Going into the last matches, third and fifth places were still up for grabs in the overall category, with Bermuda needing to win both of their matches to clinch third on countback.
The boys started off against Trinidad and Tobago in a clash for fifth and sixth place, with Trinidad favoured to win the two under-19 matches and Bermuda the under-15 and under-17 groups.
Bermuda's under-13 player Robert Maycock had been unable to play in the individual event due to a suspected broken bone in his hand but was cleared to play a day before the team event. His opponent Josh Pinnard finished fourth in the individuals and as expected showed too much experience for Maycock who went down in three games (0-9, 3-9, 0-9).
Justin Robinson had started the day off well for Bermuda by pushing his more experienced opponent, Justin Scott, to the limit and looking like he could cause an upset. But after winning the first game 9-2, he lost the next two 8-10, 7-9.
Stephen Smith also played well against Colin Ramasra but was simply outclassed as he went down 1-9, 3-9, 0-9.
Michael Shrubb and Andrew Robinson got Bermuda's two wins as they eventually went down 2-3, Shrubb crushing Simon Ramchand 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 and Robinson dumping Brandon de Montechard 9-6, 9-5, 9-0.
Playing for third and fourth place against Trinidad, the girls' team also were beaten 3-2.
Laura Robinson continued her dominance of the under-13s category by defeating Lyndsey Murray in straight games (9-4, 9-4, 9-2). In the under-19s, Katy Lennox and Morgan Lightbourne both found themselves outclassed by older and more experienced opponents. Lennox lost to Genevieve Smith 0-9, 0-9, 0-9 and Lightbourne was beaten by Kimberley Farrah 0-9, 2-9, 0-9.
This put all the pressure on Caty Luckhurst to try and keep Bermuda in the match, but it wasn't to be as she lost in straight games (2-9, 3-9, 3-9) to Joanna Scoon.
Jessica Mitchell then struggled bravely with a wrist injury to defeat Jamie Gault in a high quality match that went to five games (8-10, 9-6, 2-9, 9-6, 9-1).
Coach Ross Triffitt said: "Where we finished might appear a little disappointing compared to previous years, but we are in the process of rebuilding our team for future years and we can't help but feel very positive about our chances in the future."
