Cup Match MVP - it's anybody's guess
While the Cup Match Most Valuable Player award is finally expected to be made today by sponsors Camel following indecision on the part of the two clubs themselves, there's been much debate over the last week about who should lift the trophy.
And although colts Travis Smith of St. George's and Dennis Pilgrim of Somerset have been popular choices, a number of other players have also been in the frame.
Somerset's Corey Hill has been picked out for his solid batting and bowling contribution while St. George's skipper Charlie Marshall was singled out for his brave declarations plus a first innings knock of 71 which proved to be the top score during the two days.
The Royal Gazette this week contacted a number of players, umpires and club officials and asked their opinion.
Here's what they had to say:
Cal Waldron (PHC player): "I think the St. George's colt Travis Smith had a great game and should be awarded the trophy. There were a number of good performances but his stands out in my mind."
Randy Butler (umpire): "I think Corey Hill had a good match. He did small, effective things like batting and bowling at key moments of the game. Smith and Dennis Pilgrim did excellently too. But Hill was more valuable to a team that went on to win the cup."
Ivan Clifford (Commercial League official): "I think the award should go to St. George's skipper Charlie Marshall for making a game of it on an easy-paced pitch with two sporting declarations. And he also contributed 71, which was the top score, and 35 in his two innings. There is no doubt the declarations added excitement to the game and prevented the draw many feared."
Delby Borden (St. David's team official:) "Travis Smith gets my vote over everybody else. He was a colt and it was quite a feat for him to get the wickets of so many quality players. I was surprised to see players like Janeiro Tucker and Albert Steede having trouble against him. Travis carried the team in the bowling and it was pleasing to see him do so well in his first ever Cup Match."
Andre Manders (former Somerset skipper and PHC player-coach:) "Corey Hill is my choice because he changed the game around with his batting and also chipped in to take four wickets in the second innings. Travis Smith did have a good Cup Match but unfortunately he wasn't on the winning side. Hill gets my vote with Somerset winning, although Charlie Marshall declared to make a game of it. Hill turned the game around with his fine batting, including a quickfire knock of 11 not out in the second innings when Somerset were losing wickets."
Randy Raynor (Southampton team official:) "I'm a Somerset man but I think Travis Smith should win it because like everybody says you never see a colt going into Cup Match and getting ten wickets. He displayed a lot of maturity for his young age with his great haul of wickets. Somerset didn't have to go after the runs when St. George's declared but he managed to outwit the batsmen and get the wickets nevertheless. Dennis Pilgrim bowled well but the wickets he got he didn't really beat the bat, he wasn't nearly as dominant as Smith."
Phillip Burgess (Flatts player): "Dennis Pilgrim is my choice because he had a good all-round performance during the two days, fielding, batting and bowling well throughout. It was good to see a colt like him do so well and the same applies to the colt from St. George's, Travis Smith, who I ranked a close second to Pilgrim overall. Two solid performances from colts was exciting to see at Cup Match."
Corvette Lambert (Somerset Bridge player): "Dennis Pilgrim should win the award because he gave a solid all-round performance. He made runs, he got wickets and he took catches. Travis Smith played well too, but his ten wickets didn't really contribute to anything. Pilgrim's all-out effort helped Somerset to win Cup Match."
Allan Walker (Bailey's Bay player): "I have to go with Dennis Pilgrim of Somerset because he gave a solid all-round performance. He took three catches, he had five dismissals and they were key batsmen and not tail-enders and he also scored a few runs. I can understand the support that Travis Smith has received because he did do very well by taking ten wickets which was an accomplishment in itself, but he didn't bat the first day while Pilgrim made contributions in all areas. He got key wickets on the second day when St. George's were definitely digging in and making a bid for runs."
