New signing good news for City

The signing of Eyal Berkovic from Celtic for ?1.5 million is great news for City and great news for me.

From what I saw of him with his former clubs, he's a quality player, a passing player. I'd like to think that he will be someone who can supply good through balls from the midfield for me.

Last season - and even the season before - I rarely got through balls to run onto and lot of my goals came from crosses from wide positions.

I hear that one of the papers over here is reporting that Berkovic will be paid ?25,000 a week, plus a ?250,000 bonus if City win promotion.

When you see these figures in the papers, you don't know how true they are. But City obviously see him as being that important and if they want to pay him that well, then I say well done to him.

Of course, if he doesn't play well, the first thing people will mention is his salary.

I have nothing against one of my team-mates being paid so well. What I am against is when you get players who come in for a lot of money and then are almost guaranteed a starting place. I believe that if you're in form you should be playing, whether you're an experienced player or a young lad.

But I think Berkovic is a quality player who will do well for us.

Players in England don't talk about wages. In that sense it's the complete opposite to Bermuda. Before I left Bermuda I remember a lot of people used to cash each other's cheques and therefore they knew what others were getting paid.

Here, everyone's wages are paid directly into the bank and no players talk about what they earn.

On Saturday, we played our first pre-season match at Halifax Town and won 2-1. They were good opponents for us in that they appeared to be about a week further on with their pre-season training than us. They were a bit faster and fitter and in those terms they gave us a good test.

All the City players played half a game and I have to say we were absolutely knackered. The first pre-season game always leaves you feeling like that, it's a fact of life.

I was supposed to come on for the second half, but I ended up playing 15 minutes of the first half too, because the young striker who started, Leon Mike, came off injured. I was pleading for him to get up and carry on! It felt like I played half an hour longer than I did.

At the moment, it's all about fitness and players can improve that, not just when they've got the ball, but by working harder when they haven't got it.

Sharpness only comes when you get fit. Some of the lads said when I turned I looked like the QE II turning! My mind knew what I wanted to do, it just didn't happen that way.

It was a good workout for us. I had one or two chances, but the main thing was I was pleased to get in the box for them.

After two or three games, that's when I hope the goals will start to come. If they come before, I'll take them.

Going back to when Bermuda played Trinidad, that's how I would have been if I had played. When you're not fit you can't control a ball properly and you don't make a run that, in your mind, you want to make.

At Halifax, I had my first experience in England of being team captain. When Stuart Pearce came off, the manager Kevin Keegan told him to give me the captain's armband for the second half. There were one or two senior players he could have given it to, so it was nice that he chose me.

I'm not really a player who does a lot of talking on the field, except to the players who have an immediate effect on me, the midfielders and the wingers.

The gaffer told us he realised that as it was the first time he'd have a look at us, some players would go out afraid to make mistakes and so not play to their full potential. He said we should relax and there was no pressure on us.

He was pleased with the result, because he said that if City had lost to Halifax, it would be remembered for a lot longer than if we won!

Tonight we play a similar sort of game at Scunthorpe United.

I'm told that Wolves have increased their bid for me to ?2-million. It's nice to be rated that highly by people. There can't be many players of 31 years of age that clubs would pay that much for.

But that sort of stuff does not concern me right now. I think City will be there at the top at the end of the season and I want to get back in the Premier League with them.

Wolves are a big club and they've been linked with big-name players like Paul Merson and Stan Collymore, as well as the lad from Preston, Jon Macken, and myself.

Only if City accepted a fee would I consider leaving. I would be surprised if they did accept Wolves' offer, because I've done well at the club as a striker, the fans like me and I'm happy here and so is my wife.
