BFA to decide on Kenny?s future
A decision on Kenny Thompson?s future as national soccer coach is expected within the ?next two weeks?.
Bermuda Football Association?s Technical Committee met on Thursday night to discuss the post, which is now vacant after Thompson?s contract ended with the Island?s participation in the World Cup qualifiers 13 days ago.
Thompson, a former international player himself, remains in his full-time post as youth development officer but with the Caribbean Cup campaign only a month away, whether or not he retains the senior coaching job remains a matter of the utmost urgency.
?The committee met on Thursday night to talk about the next steps for Bermuda football,? said committee chairman Jon Beard.
?We discussed a wide range of issues but any conclusions will have to be ratified by the executive. A number of key people are off the Island at the moment but we are well aware that the Caribbean Cup campaign is just around the corner and a decision will be made in the next two weeks.?
And Beard was quick to point out that the uncertainty over the coaching job was nothing personal against Thompson, who has turned a dormant national squad into a side that came within a whisker of the World Cup qualifying semi-final stage in seven months.
?This is not a slight on Kenny in any way,? said Beard.
?With the contract up we are just fulfilling our role as the sport?s governing body. It is something we have to look at to ensure the continued success of the youth programme and also the interests of the national team.
?Kenny has done a fantastic job with the youth programme since he took on the role and he has done a fantastic job with the national team in recent months.
?We are all very proud of the work Kenny has done and what he has achieved. I have had the pleasure of being away with Kenny and the team and he goes about his work with the utmost professionalism and the players have responded to that.?
It is understood that the national team post may now have to be advertised by Bermuda Football Association but with Thompson?s dedication to the cause, his relationship with the players and Caribbean Cup qualifiers less than six weeks away, it would take a brave decision to oust him with the national programme currently in full swing.
The at-times inspiring performances of the Bermuda side during a hectic schedule saw the Island team beat Nicaragua and Montserrat and stir the country into a frenzy after a narrow first leg defeat in San Salvador in the second round of the World Cup qualifiers.
A sell-out crowd at the National Sports Centre then watched ten-man Bermuda cope without the injured Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne to battle bravely but in vain against the Central Americans, going out 4-3 on aggregate despite drawing the final game 2-2.
Thompson and his team won over a lot of fans with that performance and ? anonymous letters to asidethe affable coach seems to have the backing of Bermuda.
It is understood one of the many options being considered by the Technical Committee is to appoint Thompson to a ?Director of Football? role, overseeing both senior and youth programmes.
