Couper and Kyme hit form ahead of trip Down Under
Two Melbourne-bound Bermuda athletes enjoyed perfect pre-Commonwealth Games weekends, Ashley Couper breaking her national Mile record once again and Nick Kyme climbing back to the top of the squash tree.
Couper, running in the appropriately named Last Chance Meet in Seattle, finished her Mile in four minutes 33.82 seconds, shaving another two seconds off her last run in Arkansas in which had set new personal bests and national records.
Unlike the previous event, where the California-based athlete had run her fastest but still finished down the field, Couper led from wire to wire in this race, describing her ability to push herself to new heights without any competition as ?a great mental exercise?.
She now heads down to Melbourne to join her team-mates in superb form, making the most of an injury-free year of competition to break the national record either officially or unofficially on at least three separate occasions.
Kyme, meanwhile, avenged his shock Fast Forward Freight National Championship defeat to Irish former pro Patrick Foster with a far more professional performance on Friday night.
Playing in a match to decide the number one spot for the upcoming Rosebowl championship ? an annual northern Caribbean competition ? Kyme took Foster apart 11-9, 11-7, 11-5 in a comfortable, confidence-boosting win.
Unlike their last encounter, this time Kyme imposed himself physically on Foster, taking the ball early and leaving the older man gasping for breath as early as the second game.
?I certainly had a point to prove,? said Kyme.
?I played a hell of a lot better this time around, although I know I am capable of a lot more.
?I don?t know what happened last time but I wanted to make up for it in this game before I head off to Melbourne on Thursday and I think I did that.?
