Singleton makes impression in practice runs

Patrick Singleton might be injured but he couldn?t be more relaxed ahead of his Olympic date with destiny.

The sole Bermudian competitor in the Torino Games is suffering the affects of a hip injury which is also now bringing pain to his back and pelvic region after the first day of official training on the skeleton track at Cesena Pariol.

Despite the handicap, Singleton finished a very creditable 13th after the first run, a place in the standings that delighted him.

?I didn?t try too hard on the push, that wasn?t what the run was about, but I still had a great time and was delighted to finish 13th,? said Singleton, competing at this third Games after previous appearances in the luge at Nagano, Japan, and Salt Lake City four years ago.

?If I had gone my hardest at the push, I could have been up in the top ten or so. For me it was about not pushing my body too hard and about the driving ? and watching the video afterwards, my lines were near perfect.

?I think my work on the course was probably better than a lot of the other competitors even though my time wasn?t as fast. But I can still be happy that I beat all the Austrians and a guy who was the silver medallist at the last Olympics.?

Realistically, Singleton admits that holding that same position in the real thing on Friday might be a little bit beyond him, particularly with his injury handicap, but he is happy that his frame of mind will help him.

?I am feeling incredibly relaxed,? continued Singleton, who carried the flag at the Opening Ceremony, although the temperatures were too low to bring him out in his traditional Bermuda shorts, worn at the Salt Lake Games and now hanging in the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.

?Maybe because it is my third Games now, I can be like this. It is a nice atmosphere in our Village, it doesn?t quite have the Olympic atmosphere that I experienced on the last two occasions, but there is a nice feel to the place.?

Although Singleton has watched a few of the other events, he hasn?t ventured out to watch any other live sports, instead simply focusing on the task in hand.

?I can leave all that until afterwards,? he added.

?That is a nice part of being here but I am here to compete and that can be my only focus for now. I?ll worry about enjoying myself later.?
