Samaritan steps forward for sick UK woman
A critically-ill British woman who was stranded in Bermuda because she has no medical insurance was last night being flown home after a kind-hearted businessman pledged to foot the $89,000 for her Medivac flight.
The benefactor, who has asked that his identity should not be revealed, contacted the family of Sheila Hollinghurst after reading about her plight in yesterday?s.
Her grateful daughter has now dubbed the man ?a guardian angel? for his amazing generosity in paying for the flight to the UK, where Mrs. Hollinghurst, 54, can be transferred to Hope Hospital in Salford, Manchester and undergo the neurosurgery that could save her life.
The grandmother of six from Manchester, England suffered an aneurysm in her brain on Sunday while cruising to the Island on .
After arriving in Bermuda she was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at the King Edward Memorial Hospital where she was yesterday still fighting for her life. Staff at KEMH told her family that the essential surgery she needs cannot be carried out in Bermuda, and no hospital in the USA would take her due to her lack of insurance.
Her daughter, Amanda Turner, was left desperately trying to find the ?50,000 ? approximately $89,000 ? needed to fund the only alternative option, which is flying her mother home to the UK with a specialist medical team to care for her during the journey.
With the Foreign Office and banks unable to help, Mrs. Turner was left to issue a desperate plea for help.
Speaking just minutes afterwards, Mrs. Turner said from Manchester: ?It is absolutely unbelievable news! When my phone rang I thought it was the hospital to say that my mum had regained consciousness, and was OK.
?Instead, it was a man saying he had read about my mum in and that he would help. I was jumping up and down with joy and screaming when I heard. I told him that he must be a guardian angel. It is remarkable that there is someone who has such generosity and kindness of spirit.
?I only wish that I could meet him to say thank you, as he has helped us overcome our biggest obstacle, and now my mum will be coming home. Now all I can do is to pray that she makes it through the flight.?
As went to press last night, a spokeswoman at KEMH confirmed that Mrs. Hollinghurst was being put on to a Medivac flight.
