Upstarts defeat Panthers in thriller

Women’s ‘A’ DivisionSwifts 1Ravens 4Jessica Hollis scored a brace as Ravens beat Swifts.Ravens started strongly and were on the scoresheet first when Katie Masters hit the net in the 28th minute.At the beginning of the second half Swifts’ defence went to sleep as a short pass at the top of the circle allowed Jessica Hollis to shoot unopposed in the 37th minute.Swifts did manage to get themselves back within one goal a minute later after a long pass by Alex Francis in the Ravens circle was picked up by Ryanne Bardgett who scored with a reverse stick shot.Hollis restored the two-goal cushion in the 43rd minute before Kristen Moreby rounded out the scoring in the 52nd.Budgies 0Canaries 0Neither Budgies or Canaries could find the elusive winning goal as the teams played to a draw.There was pressure on both teams to pull out the win, with Canaries coming out with a very strong forward line but the Budgies defence were ready for anything that was thrown at them.Budgies had university players back in their ranks such as Yvonna Osborne and Francesca Cacace, and the side thought they had scored from a penalty corner but the goal was disallowed.Wildcats 3Swifts 2Susanna Almeida scored a hat-trick as Wildcats outlasted Swifts in a highly entertaining match.Swifts started the brighter of the two teams but it was Wildcats’ Susanna Almeida who opened the scoring in the 20th minute.Swifts changed their line up at half-time and Ryanne Bargett’s shot which looked goal bound in the 37th minute hit the sideboard instead.Almeida doubled the lead with her second in the 43rd minute, before Swifts’ Iman Smith squeezed a goal from a narrow angle in the 49th minute.Almeida scored her hat-trick from a penalty corner in the 57th minute, but with four minutes left Swifts’ Raven Pearman picked up the ball on the halfway line, passed to Smith whose pass to Bargett was slammed passed the Wildcats’ goalkeeper.Despite an all out attack Swifts could not find a way to tie up the game.Women’s ‘B’ DivisionCanaries 1Bluebirds 1A much-improved Canaries team didn’t make it easy for second place Bluebirds. In the 24th minute it was Canaries’ Gabie Gabric who was first on the scoreboard scoring from a field goal, but Bluebirds’ Kourtney Fassler would get the equaliser in the 58th minute from a penalty corner to end the game all tied up.Ravens 2Cardinals 0Goals from Georgia Harris and Katie Masters gave Ravens the victory over Cardinals.Harris opened the scoring after 15 minutes for Ravens who dominated the first period which saw many high balls and resulted in Cardinals defender Kaywell Outerbridge getting hit in the face and shoulder.Cardinals ‘keeper Holly Augustus denied Ravens on numerous occasions but could not prevent Masters from adding a second from a field goal in the 66th minute.Men’s DivisionRebels 1Polecats 3Polecats’ Richard Marriott scored in the 2nd minute following a penalty corner to give Polecats the lead. Donny Simmons added another in the 13th minute from a field goal and then grabbed his second in the 16th minute.Rebels’ Ross Wilyman pulled a goal back in the 56th minute.Upstarts 7Panthers 4Panthers Tony Ward converted an early penalty to give his team the lead. Philip Philpott then doubled his team’s advantage in the 6th minute from a field goal.Upstarts’ Jon Sutcliffe pulled a goal back in the 26th minute from a field goal, but one minute later Panthers’ Philpott advanced his team’s lead with a second field goal.Alan Gilbertson hit a field goal for Upstarts in the 35th minute to end the first half 3-2 to Panthers. Upstarts’ John Thompson struck a first field goal in the 43rd minute of the second half, before Gary Tavares converted a penalty corner in the 58th minute.Gilbertson then struck his second field goal in the 62nd minute to give his side a 5-3 lead.Upstarts’ Bruce Smith added a sixth goal in the 67th minute, before Gilbertson completed his hat-trick in the 69th minute.Panthers’ Jack Finlay scored the final goal of the game in the 70th minute to make it 7-4.
