Cougars win seven-goal thriller

St George’s Colts 3Devonshire Cougars 4(After extra-time)Tumani Steede struck twice in extra time as Devonshire Cougars squeezed into the FA Cup semi-finals after a see-saw battle with St George’s Colts at BAA Field last night.Steede’s final strike with just minutes to go handed Cougars the lead for the fourth time in the match, and for once they managed to hold on to it.Even then Cougars piled forward in search of a fifth, and it would have been no surprise if Colts had equalised once more to send the game to penalties. The attacking instinct that makes the Big Cats so enthralling to watch, also makes them their own worst enemy, and the indiscipline that runs through the side was the main reason that St George’s remained in the game for as long as they did.Jahron Dickinson was the main beneficiary of that indiscipline, bagging a hat-trick on a night when the goals came thick and fast.Having totally dominated the first 20 minutes and seen a variety of last ditch tackles from the St George’s defence deny them, Cougars finally opened the scoring when Tumani Steede’s clever inside ball sent Domico Coddington clear. The Cougars skipper calmly slotted the ball past Eunico Trott in the Colts goal, and that should have signaled the beginning of the end for the East End team.Cougars though got sloppy and St George’s grew in confidence as the half wore on, with Clay Darrell especially causing problems for central defenders Zeiko White and Kijuan Franks. As with most of the goals last night, the equaliser, when it came, was down to a defensive error. As half time approached, Cougars gave the ball away in midfield and then stood and watched as Jahzinho Bassett’s cross flew to Dickinson, and he drilled the ball back across goal and past Ricardo Brangman. The second half began in much the same fashion as the first, with Cougars throwing everything at a far more disciplined St George’s side. Too often however the final ball was lacking, and it wasn’t until another defensive mistake that Cougars finally edged back in front. With little more than 20 minutes to go in normal time, David Signor miscued an attempted clearance straight across the face of his own goal, and following a scramble, Jamie Smith bundled the ball home to put Cougars in front for a second time.It was at this point that any well-organised team would have closed the game down, denied St George’s space, and generally seen out the remaining time. Not Cougars, they threw everyone forward, left gaping holes all over the pitch, and were duly punished for it.This time Darrell got clear down the right, skipped past the last man and sent over a wicked cross that Dickinson gleefully knocked in from six yards out. Already faced with a difficult task, St George’s night got even harder when Chae Simons was sent off for his second bookable offence, but they saw themselves through to extra time without further mishap. The first 15 minutes of that extra period passed largely without incident, until a neat through ball from Kwame Steede split the St George’s defence and cousin Tumani fired the ball home.Colts were level 30 seconds later when Dickinson took full advantage of a mix-up between Franks and Brangman to draw his side level once again. With time ticking away the game appeared to be heading to penalties, but Tumani Steede had the final say, poking the ball home from two yards out.St George’s Colts: E Trott, E Signor, J Warren, D Signor, J Bassett, J Hayward (D Smith, 78), C Simmons, J Dickinson, C Darrell, O Bascome (C Hill, 84), J Carlington (D Thomas, 80).
