Demolition at Police station site set to begin

Government?s development of a new combined Hamilton Police Station/Court building will start tomorrow with the demolition of the James Building near the junction of Church Street and Court Street.

The Ministry of Works and Engineering and Housing said yesterday that its crews will start demolition works at 7.30 a.m. The demolition is expected to conclude on Sunday.

However, a Ministry spokeswoman said she did not know when the new Police/Court building would be completed.

Police at the Hamilton Station have long complained about poor working conditions at its Parliament Street location and it was previously reported that the building currently housing Supreme Court Four and Five on Court Street contained mould which forced witnesses to take breaks in their testimony.

?In anticipation of this weekend?s activities, preliminary work has already begun on the site which includes the removal of stored items from the building, as well as securing the area for the full destruction works to occur,? the Ministry release said.

It added that traffic and pedestrian restrictions would be in place at the site next to the Global House Building on Church Street for safety reasons, advising the public to find alternative routes out of town.
