Fine for stealing candy

A 43-year-old was fined $200 in Magistrates' Court yesterday for stealing candy from a gas station.

Don Kirk Simmons, of Cedar Hill, Warwick pleaded guilty to stealing a bag of Skittles candy worth $2.80 from the Warwick Shell gas station on July 3.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke said at 5.30 p.m. that day Simmons was seen putting candy in his trousers as he left the service station.

When Police arrested him at 5.55 p.m., officers saw the open pack of candy in a van and $20 was found in his pocket after a personal search at Somerset Police Station, the prosecutor said.

Simmons told the court he was very remorseful and the act was out of character.

However, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said the punishment was not about the value of the candy but about deterring a person from walking into someone else's shop and taking whatever they wanted.

“You stole for no good reason,”Mr. Warner said. “It cost the system over $2,000 to bring you here.”
