Police issue appeal for shooting witnesses
Police have made no arrests concerning a drive-by shooting in Warwick on Thursday that put an 18-year-old Warwick man in hospital with a gunshot wound to his right arm.
Despite Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety saying extra Police would be posted at several large events over the weekend in case of retaliatory attacks, none took place over the weekend.
Yesterday Police continued to appeal for witnesses to the shooting that took place outside the Swizzle on South Shore pub - formerly Paw Paws - at the junction of South Shore Road and Dunscombe Road around 11.40 p.m. on Thursday. “He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) where he was treated for the injury which was non-life threatening and subsequently released on Saturday, July 1, 2006,” a Police release said.
“Active inquiries into the incident are ongoing and Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact Chief Inspector Tracy Adams at the Serious Crime Unit on 299-4315 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1-800-623-8477.”
It was previously reported that the attack was believed to be part of a turf war between rival town and country gangs and that a series of altercations took place in the vicinity of the South Shore pub up to the night of the shooting.
Onlookers said three gunshots were fired at four men from no more than 20 feet away as a masked gunman was driven off on the back of a motorbike by another man.
Another resident was quoted to say she was surprised to see pub patrons - both visitors and locals - appear to calmly order food and drink after the shooting.
Minister Horton said on Friday the shooting was being fully investigated by seven Police officers.
