Premier: Forum proves Caricom has much to offer
The Premier believes that Bermuda has much in common with Caricom when it comes to sustainable development.
Premier Alex Scott delivered the keynote address at the Third Caribbean Environmental Forum and Exhibition in Antigua this week. He returned to the Island on Thursday.
Yesterday, in the House of Assembly, he said the trip was another example of the fact that Caricom has "so much to offer us".
"We have much in common with our Caricom friends to the south, particularly as it relates to sustainable development. Energy production, the reduction of reliance on fossil fuels, waste management, coastal erosion and the impact of global climate changes on small islands are issues that are probably better understood by those of us who live with these issues every day ? rather than those who only come to know them academically and statistically."
He said he is certain that Bermuda is on the right track with its sustainable development project and noted that the position of Director of Sustainable Development may be unique in the region.
"While Bermuda's participation has been instructive for many of the delegates, it has also yielded much food for thought for local policymakers," he said. "We need to be concerned about the environmental and economic implications of our energy consumption in an era of rising costs and translate those concerns into long term, strategic policy-making as some countries have done."
He added that the Island could not exist in isolation and must avail of opportunities to learn from others, particularly countries with common issues.
"Less and less but every now and again someone questions what we get out of out associate membership in Caricom," he said. "Our invitation to CEF-3 is a perfect example of just one of the significant benefits we gain."He added that Bermuda must play a role in the partnership and share the Island's knowledge with Caricom members.
"CEF-3 was yet another example of Bermuda being a small country 'in big clothes' and carrying large influence."
