Fourteen-year-old girl's faith and courage inspired Gospel musical Bermudians next week will hear a gospel musical inspired by a 14-year-old girl's faith and courage.

"Lord Lift Us Higher'' is based on Keysha Serville, of Connecticut, who was stricken by cancer several years ago.

It will be performed by a 28 member-strong cast from the New York-based J.O.B.

Productions Company.

The production has also toured Atlanta, New York, Connecticut, Boston, Springfield and Cape Cod.

Much of the cast appeared in the long-running musical "Mama I Want to Sing'', put on in Bermuda five years ago.

"Lord Lift Us Higher'' has come to Bermuda thanks to the efforts of the Ardent Workers of St. John AME Church.

It will be performed on February 18 and 19 at St. Paul AME Centennial Hall in Hamilton.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. and will be a highlight of a month-long celebration of black history at St. John AME Church.

A St. John AME Church spokeswoman said: "The play focuses on a courageous young teenager who shows us that even in the midst of adversity we can always find something positive to give if we look for it.

"This is a very powerful story which dramatises how compassion, hope, love, joy and faith can enable us to triumph over any tragedy or adversity.

"It speaks to the true human spirit that dwells within us all.'' Patrons of the Off Broadway musical are Cultural Affairs Minister the Hon.

Wayne Furbert, and Mrs. Furbert.

Proceeds go to the Building Fund of St. John's where the pastor is the Rev.

Howard H.L. Dill.

Rev. Dill, a young Bermudian, recently returned to the Island after a spell as a pastor in Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
