Crisson Jewellers have decided to close their Gucci concession after five years in business.

Peter Crisson said that it had been a decision to either take the store to the next level or to call it a day.

He said Gucci accounted for less than 5 percent of their total sales and 1 percent of their profits and they had decided to concentrate on their core business of jewellery and watches.

The Crisson store on Front Street will be undergoing a face lift in the new year and the present Gucci space has been allocated to a US jewellery designer, David Yurman.

Paula Marshall, who will be responsible for the David Yurman boutique, said that the jeweller was a very well known brand in the US.

She said that certain other Crisson stores were already selling David Yurman and it had been very successful.

David Yurman is a former sculptor and is well known for his cable designs in sterling silver and gold.

The new David Yurman boutique at the back of Crisson will reopen in the summer, said Ms Marshall, and will include a selection of jewellery, watches, children's jewellery and gem stones.

Van Swan, the manager of Gucci, said that Crisson had enjoyed a lot of success with the designer label in Bermuda, starting with watches and then with accessories

"But at this point we think the time is right to move on."

He added that the decision to move on and embrace something new and exciting would give the Island something to look forward to.

Mr. Swan won a Best of Bermudian award this year as Best Fashion Buyer for Gucci. He said he was not sure whether he would stay on at Crissons.

"I've decided to put my feet up for a while and explore new horizons," he said.

As for whether Gucci have made plans to reopen a concession with another distributor, Mr. Crisson said: "I'm not sure what their plans are. We certainly wish them well and I am sure they will get a call from another Bermuda retailer."
