Red Cross seeking more donations for Mozambique
flood-stricken Mozambique in southern Africa.
But more is needed to help Mozambique and the desperate countries in the south of Africa, including the island nation of Madagascar.
Since heavy rains began overflowing rivers earlier this year the West was criticised for its slow response.
The Bermuda Red Cross began its appeal on March 1 and has raised $15,525 in donations.
Red Cross Director Ann Spencer-Arscott said: "Certainly it's a very good response considering we only just launched it.
"But knowing the devastation that is there and how much is needed,'' she continued, "I would love for the public to respond even more. But we are happy with what we have got.'' Mrs. Spencer-Arscott said the money would be forwarded to the British Red Cross which would distribute it to sister organisations in the region.
She explained that in such cases, it is often better to buy supplies in neighbouring countries rather than shipping it from overseas which would take time.
The British Red Cross has raised more than 1 million to feed and care for the millions of people affected.
More than 10,000 people have been rescued from dangerous situations in the country with the focus now on getting clean water, sanitation, medical supples, in addition to food to people.
Red Cross volunteers are also providing first aid and basic health care.
A clearing of the weather has allowed military helicopters and light planes to resume delivery of humanitarian relief items, but heavy rain is forecasted for next week.
People wishing to support the drive can deposit funds into the following accounts: Bank of Bermuda 701 19842; Bank of Butterfield 20 006 060 663859 200; or at Gibbons Deposit account 16016.
Cheques can be sent to the Red Cross at "Charleswood'', 9 Berry Hill Road, Paget, DV04.
