RE-CREATION

Re-creating history: The Freedom Schooner Amistad and the Spirit of Bermuda were in the Great Sound yesterday to re-enact a scene from a famous painting by Deryk Foster entitled Rivalry off the West End. The painting depicts the Bermuda built RN Pickle III, a Baltimore clipper, and a Bermuda sloop. After the abolishment of the slave trade by the United Kingdom in 1807 the United States sold many former slave-trading ships to countries that were still engaged in the trade like Portugal and Spain, and it became a boat race between the slavers and the Royal Navy slave patrol.Photo by Mark Tatem
