?Tuff? start to Rangers? New Year

It might be a brand new year but it was the same old story at the top of Commercial League with Tuff Dogs triumphing again, this time with a 3-2 victory over Key West Rangers.

And with BAA's and Robin Hood's games both postponed the table remained totally unchanged.

Tuff Dogs took the advantage early on in a lively tussle which saw some good football displayed by both sides.

Nathan Brown bundled home a near post corner in the tenth minute. Seven minutes later a Brown shot came off the crossbar and Quinton Burgess converted the rebound.

Dogs looked as if they would run away with the tie when Burgess looked odds on to put them 3-0 ahead but from three yards out he scuffed a low hard cross wide after the keeper got his finger tips to the cross.

With 30 minutes gone Key West came to life with quick possession football and snatched one back when Paul 'Rip' Cann, who was making his debut for Key West and in the Commercial League, spotted Ian Morrison off his line and placed the ball neatly into the top right hand corner.

Key West dominated the rest of the first half and did not let off at the beginning of the second. Paul Cann grabbed his second to equalise and his side had a shot cleared off the line by Geoff Sousa. Substitute Joe Carolo came on and the momentum started to shift back to Dogs. Jeff Franklin hit the crossbar and Carolo had a long range effort tipped off the bar.

Finally, with 13 minutes, to go Carolo knocked in the winner after good work on the left by Dennis Mussen Jr. Key West searched for an equaliser late on but Dogs held on to go three points clear of nearest rival BAA with a game in hand. Robin Hood's game against MR Onions was postponed as was Lobster Pot's fixture against PHC.

North Village got three vital points in their relegation scrap against Devonshire All Stars. Sherwin Hollis got the ball rolling in the first half, while Damon Wade and Maceo Dill were on target in the second.

Runaway leaders, Valley, began the second half of their season in Commercial B as they began the first ? with a victory over Vasco Mariners. Vasco were actually 1-0 up at half-time, but Valley tore back into it with a mazey run by Mark Bourne who beat two defenders before slotting home.

Troy Simmons blasted home a scorcher from an acute angle and then finished Earl Pringle's cross with a firm header to wrap up the victory.

In a close encounter at Shelly Bay Devonshire Lions, perhaps the most improved team in the division, edged Wolves 1-0 thanks to a first half strike by Lyndon Fubler.

However, with their 7-0 win over Pest Control, Dockyard Falcons are ahead of Lions on goal difference.

Despite failing to hit the back of the Falcons net, Pest Control scored the best strikes of the game with two corking own goals according to referee Leon Butterfield.

He said: "At one stage the score was 4-0 but both teams had scored two each. Both own goals came from corners, the first was the best of the match. The centre half (Anthony Francis) met it at the near post, it slid off his head and beat everyone."

The second one goal was scored by Michael Doling at the far post.

"The fullback rose to head it, it was a great header, no one stood a chance.

"If it was in the Champion's league they would play it over and over again. To be fair, he was challenged by one of the forwards who might have put him off."

Dwayne DeRosa scored a hat-trick for Falcons who also netted through Charles Swan and Burchall (no first name supplied).

Somerset Bridge finally triumphed 3-2 over Prison Officers in a see-saw match at White Hill. Troy Smith notched for the home side on 16 minutes but M. Rawlings cancelled this out five minutes later. Jerome Richards got the home side in front early in the second half only for R. Pitcher to even things up two minutes later before Sinclair Boyles took all three points for the home side in the 78th minute.

With their best players out in force on Saturday, Somerset Extros fancied their chances against fellow strugglers Prospect/Fire but a no-show from the away side meant Extros picked up the three points for the wrong reasons.
