Tre Maxwell living the dream as shore team member with USA SailGP

Tre Maxwell has joined United States SailGP Team

Tre Maxwell is living his dream as a new member of the United States SailGP Team.

The Bermudian sailor jumped at the opportunity to work with the team and is in Spain being put through his paces helping them prepare for Spain Sail Grand Prix in Cádiz this weekend.

“I asked for the opportunity to work with the team,” Maxwell commented on the team’s Twitter account.

“Wasn’t too sure what the response was. But basically they said ‘do you want to hop on a call one day’, and I was like ‘of course’.

“I’m just helping out with the shore team. These folks are quite complex so they can’t really just throw me into the ball game and tell me do something, so I slowly have to learn day by day.

“I always wanted to join a professional team. I always wanted to be around the best sailors and this is the dream.”

The United States SailGP Team is led by Australian helmsman and chief executive Jimmy Spithill, who is a multiple America’s Cup winner and world champion.

Spithill and his colleagues are second in the standings behind leaders Japan SailGP Team with two regattas remaining in Season 2 of the global championship showcasing the high performance wing-sailed foiling F50 catamarans.

Maxwell, 22, is one of the successful candidates of SailGP’s Inspire Careers pathway programme and was also granted the opportunity of hands-on work experience within the wing department at last month’s event in Saint-Tropez, France.

He was involved in the pilot Endeavour Maritime Career Springboard Programme in 2018 and has been an integral member of the Endeavour team over the past three years.

“We are absolutely thrilled for Tre Maxwell on his new exciting role with the USA SailGP Team in Cádiz, Spain,” Jenn Pitcher, the Endeavour community engagement development and partnerships manager, told The Royal Gazette.

“We are so proud of his achievements and wish him well in his future career aspirations."

Maxwell is one of six graduates of the Maritime Career Springboard scheme, who have been selected for work experience on SailGP’s Inspire scheme.

Dontae Butterfield and Matthew Stephens were part of the content creation team for the SailGP event in Aarhus, Denmark, in August, while Maxwell was joined by Christian Roque in Saint-Tropez, who was a member of the sustainability and on-water operations team.

Benjamin Furqan and Calshunto James will also be involved in Cádiz as part of the sustainability and on-water operations team, and boat building and technical squad respectively.
