Charity swim to help people hit by cancer to be held on Sunday

A former cancer patient celebrating five years in the clear is to brave the waters off Bermuda for a charity swim.

Nina London, a columnist for The Royal Gazette, is staging the event to raise funds for cancer charity Pals.

She plans to start her 2km swim from Shelly Bay, Hamilton Parish, at noon on Sunday, with support from the Coral Beats drum corps.

The swim will help Pals start “New and Beautiful Me”, Bermuda’s first class designed to help cancer patients undergoing treatment to feel better about potential changes in appearance.

Ms London explained: “Only people who have gone through this experience know how harsh the psychological and physical side effects can be.”

The tutorials, to be provided with Hamilton make-up store Mac Bermuda, are expected to launch next month.

Ms London said she was “very emotional” after she moved from being classed as in remission to all clear after she was hit by cancer of the uterus.

She added: “It’s a huge relief – I want to show that you can fight, you can win, you can be active and swim in the ocean, and you can help other people going through this journey.

“I want to let people know it’s temporary and you will feel better. We have the strength and power to deal with it.

“It’s a very important part of the process to believe.”
