Skills-building programme for young men reports successful first year
A charity programme launched a year ago to offer support and skills building for young men said yesterday it had logged measurable decreases in risks among those enrolled.
Transitional Community Services, which assesses risk levels in clients every quarter, said there had been a steady drop in average risks tracked through a self-sufficiency index.
Wendy King, the chairwoman of the TCS board, said the organisation had enjoyed “an incredible year”.
She added: “Having accomplished one year of successful operations during a rather tumultuous time due to the impact of a global pandemic, I’m most confident that the Bermuda community can expect to see greater restorative impacts from us as TCS strives to restore our community one man at a time.”
TCS provides clients with case management, counselling, and jobs skill building, through individual and group work.
The programme for men aged 18 to 34 has received 37 referrals since it started operations in early 2021.
TCS said there were now 23 men involved in its “community bridge builders programme”.
Demond Crockwell and Gavin Smith, who are leadership coaches, work with Aruna Dismont, the programme resources manager, to help clients build their own support networks.
