A man who got into an argument with an off-duty policeman that ended with the officer’s car windows being smashed has been fined more than $2,700.

Jagai Bailey, 21, from Sandys, tried to hit Chickaya Darrell, his neighbour at the time, with a broom handle on November 25, 2021 during an altercation. A few hours later he smashed Mr Darrell’s car windows.

Lionel Jones was working at Mr Darrell’s property at the time of the incident and tried to intervene but was bitten on the buttocks by Bailey’s dog, Terra. To defend himself, Mr Jones hit the dog and Bailey with a broken shovel.

Bailey pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour, keeping a dog that injured someone and to not having a dog licence at an earlier hearing at Magistrates’ Court and appeared again yesterday for sentencing.

Magistrate Tyrone Chin fined him $2,750, as well ordering that he pay $151.46 in compensation to Mr Jones to cover his medical bill from the dog bite.

Before he was sentenced, the defendant’s mother, Anne Bailey, told Mr Chin that Mr Darrell had been “torturing her son” before the incident at Fairhaven Lane and that there was history between the two men.

She added that the family had moved out of the property as a result of the quarrel.

Bailey was given until December 28 to pay the fine and compensation. The court was told that Bailey’s father has since fixed Mr Darrell’s car windows.
