A free concert tomorrow will celebrate the life of an international opera singer who trained many of the island’s artistes.Michaela Antoinette, the daughter of Marcelle Clamens, said the concert at the Berkeley Institute cafetorium would bring together a string of professional performers who were her mother’s students over the years. She added: “It will be snapshots of her career — she taught so many people, and raised more than $50,000 for scholarships in music, dance and theatre.”Ms Clamens and her husband, Michael, founded Talent Explosion in 2003 — an annual fundraising revue that ran for eight years as a showcase for Bermuda’s talent.Ms Antoinette said that her mother gave her time to train artistes as “her way to keep on giving after Talent Explosion came to an end”.“She gave free lessons to her dedicated and serious students.”Ms Clamens, who was 65, died last month and Saturday would have been her birthday. She and her husband would also have marked their 50th anniversary in May.Ms Antoinette said: “We want to give everyone a night to show their support and love, share their memories and enjoy some light refreshment.”She added the concert was also a chance to increase knowledge about Marfan syndrome, the genetic disease that affects the connective tissue, that cut short Ms Clamens’s life.Ms Antoinette explained: “There is no cure, but there are ways to prolong people’s lives through preventive surgery.”The concert will run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and donations will be taken, instead of flowers, to maintain Ms Clamens’s organic garden.Performers will include Joy Barnum, Blac, Latosha Codrington, Brittany Cox, Charo Hollis, Korrin Lightbourne, Emma Mayor, Deon Rawlins and Desta Zion.Video performances will include Tricray Astwood and Wendell Dill will act as MC.
