Openers fire WIA to Carib Cup win
West Indian Association crushed Jamaican Association to lift the Caribbean Cup — and the rivals will meet again in the Commercial Cricket League's delayed first round of matches this Sunday.
Barry Richards and Chris Clarke laid the foundation for WIA's 96-run victory at Shelly Bay by blazing 101 for the first wicket, and although wickets tumbled at regular intervals afterwards, WIA's 172 in 38.2 overs was always a mountain to climb for the Jamaicans who subsided to 76 all out in 27 overs.
Hard-hitting Richards' 68 included three sixes and four fours while Clarke made 40.
Pick of the Jamaicans' attack was Ian Coke, who claimed four for 34 in 11 overs, while Kevin Abrahams took two for 27 in seven and David Gibbs two for 32 in nine.
Rowan Ramotar helped rout his former team-mates by snapping up three for 35 in nine overs, fast bowler Anthony Brathwaite bagged three for 18 in 10 and Trevor Haynes picked up three for 15 in four.
"We got licks," admitted JA spokesman Glenmore Barrett.
"But it was a nice game and there was a big turnout of fans."
The clubs will meet in another Caribbean Cup match, sponsored by Spring Garden Restaurant and Bar, at the end of the season.
A venue for Sunday's league match between WIA and JA has yet to be confirmed but defending champions Forties are away to Fine Leg Byes at newly-refurbished Royal Naval Field, on which Willow Cuts have signed a 21-year Government lease, according to club president Richard Basden.
Elsewhere, North Village travel to Garrison Field to take on St. David's, who are back in the league after a season's break, while Hamilton Parish are at home to Western Stars at Shelly Bay.
Newcomers BC Allrounders, who complete the enlarged, nine-strong league, have a bye.
