Smith gets back in the frame for medal
Malcolm Smith has kept his medal hopes alive after finishing third and eighth in the sunfish races at Marina da Gloria yesterday.
The former world champion has had a mixed bag of results in Rio so far but a third place finish in his first race breathed fresh life into his chances of a podium place.
His second race didn't go so well with the veteran sailor coming eighth to leave him just a few points off fifth place in the overall standings.
In the laser radial it was a testing day for Katrina Williams, who received the orange flag for rule 42 in the first race, before coming eighth in her second.
While in the snipe, Leatrice Roman battled through discomfort after ripping off her big toenail while putting away her boat on Wednesday.
Alongside Stevie Dickinson, the pair finished 10th in their first race, which they will be able to discard, and eighth in their second.
Team manager Deb Gravelle said Roman's accident had been a "bloody mess" and required bandaging.
"After some legal painkillers and antibiotics she's doing well, but we know it has to be affecting her hiking ¿ especially with more wind," she said.
"It was another cloudy day with much cooler weather, but there is wind.
"Since we still don't have the number of races we were hoping for, we had to start an hour early again."
In the laser Brett Wright managed to stay with the lead group and finished seventh in his first outing. He finished twelfth in his second.
Bermuda's sailors will be in action today ¿ the final races before Saturday's medal round.

A battling performance by Bermudian bowler David Maycock in the men's singles was not enough to book his place in the quarter-final round at the Pan-Am Games.
USA's Cassidy Schaub beat Maycock, with the Islander scoring 569 to his opponents 678 in three games at the Barra Bowling lanes in Rio de Janeiro yesterday.
He had progressed to the eight finals by finishing an impressive ninth out of 32 performers in the qualifiers on Wednesday. Fellow Bermudian Kevin Swan had finished in last place.
