Smith makes up for disappointing start
The sailing finally got underway in Rio after the weekend’s postponement with Bermuda’s team delivering encouraging displays at Marina da Gloria.
Former world champion Malcolm Smith made a poor start in his first sunfish race, finishing seventh, before picking up in his second race by coming third.
n the laser radial Katrina Williams started her Games in fine form finishing fifth and then third.
While in the snipe Stevie Dickinson and Leatrice Roman finished their first race eighth, before being flagged by the jury boat for rule 42. They proceeded to finish in the bottom three boats.
Team coach Deb Gravelle admitted there was room for improvement but insisted it had been a productive opening day for the sailors. “We won’t talk about Malcolm’s start,” she said. “He found some pretty shifty conditions and eventually made it around the course in seventh — not the way he wanted to start his regatta.
“Katrina had great speed in her race and played the left side of the course. Everyone was pleasantly surprised that she rounded the weather mark first -— I think she is still pinching herself.
“The second race in the snipe saw Stevie and Leatrice work their way to the finish when we spotted the orange jury boat and heard the awful whistle — they’d been flagged for rule 42, propulsion.
“After three circles, Stevie didn’t take the call too well, they ended up in the bottom three boats. Good news is that after spending a few days tinkering with the rigging they appear to be very fast.” Insufficient wind had seen Sunday’s racing postponed. Smith had started his sunfish race but the windless weather prevented the sailors reaching their first mark within the allotted 20-minutes.
Brett Wright then had his laser race also postponed after a three-hour wait for conditions to improve at the Marina da Gloria.
Bermuda’s ten-pin bowlers will be in action today with the men and women’s doubles teams involved in their final series games at Barra Bowling.
It proved a testing morning yesterday for David Maycock and Kevin Swan in the men’s team who ended their first series in 13th position out of 15 countries. Maycock finished with a total of 954 and Swan with 964.
