Youngsters on the right track in US

Flyers Track Club have returned from a successful overseas meet after claiming a total of 16 medals at the 32nd Annual Miami Northwest Track & Field Classic.

Accompanied by coaches Donna and Mike Watson, the 14 athletes, aged between 11 and 15, took on competitors from the Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, Guyana, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and throughout the US.

Held at the Nathaniel Traz Powell Stadium last week, most of the events had at least three heats with the top eight overall earning medals.

Many of those who attended were striving to book a place at this summer’s IAAF World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic, by shattering qualifying times.

Unfortunately none of the Bermudian contingent managed to achieve that particular remit with Darico Clarke the closest — narrowly missing out in the 800 metres.

Outstanding performances included Paul Simons (Masters), first in the 100m; Darico Clarke first in the 800m; Shuntae Hendrickson first in the 800m; Dage Minors first in the 1500m, and Keshuntay Graham, Tonya Robinson, Kenya Thompson, Michellae Edwards first in the 4X100m relay.

Other athletes who claimed medals were Darrion Simons, third in the 100m and 200m; Ashley Berry second in the 1,500m and 3,000m; De’Quan Lodge third in the 200m; Adlai Teye-Botchway third in the 3,000m and Megan Berry third in the 1,500m.

The coaches’ 4X100m team, consisting of Donna Watson, Michael Watson, Angie Berry and Paul Simons also took first place.

It was the second year the Flyers Track Club had competed at the meet and Watson said she believed the trip was a valuable experience. “It was a successful meet for us and we were pleased with the amount of medals we picked up,” said the former Bermudian track star.

The Bermuda Track and Field Association are making a conscious effort to take young athletes to as many international meets as possible and they will be airborne again when they head for a meet in Baltimore on July 5.
