Khano: 'I've got much more to give'
Despite cementing a regular starting berth for high-flying New England Revolution Khano Smith is refusing to rest on his laurels insisting: “There’s a lot more to come from me yet.”
The Bermudan international has been enjoying an Indian summer for the Revs this term and believes he has finally discarded his “bit-part” player label after a series of eye-catching displays.
Now in his third season in the MLS, Smith has become a permanent fixture in coach Steve Nicol’s line-up, starting all but one match.
And he is optimistic the injuries that plagued his 2006 campaign are firmly behind him.
“I’m starting to find a lot more consistency to my game this season and obviously the more games I play the better I get,” he said.
“I spent a lot of time on the injury table last year which prevented me kick-starting my Revs career. But this year I have been getting regular starts and my performances have improved as result.
“So yes, I am happy with the way things are going but I feel there’s is lot more to come from me yet — a lot more.”
The 25-year-old has been deployed in an unfamiliar left-wing-back role this season, despite being used primarily as a hot-shot striker for both his country and former club Dandy Town.
Yet, ironically it’s the attacking element of his game that Smith feels he must enhance, with the Warwick-born winger yet to open his goal-scoring account.
“As wing-back I am expected to defend and attack but strangely it’s the offensive side of my game I feel I must improve,” he said.
“I have played a lot of football as a striker and so attacking comes naturally to me but I haven’t been able to contribute as much as I would like in that area.
“My defensive play has been fine and but there’s no doubt I have I lot more to offer offensively. I’m confident the goals will come this season — it’s always been such a big game part of my game.
“I’ve played a lot of my football as a striker and if the chances come I have the predatory instincts take them.”
Currently top in the MLS overall table, the Revs seven-game unbeaten run came to a halt last weekend against Kansas City Wizards in a 4-3 defeat.
This weekend the Eastern Conference outfit will be looking to return to winning ways when they host Real Salt Lake who are still looking for their first victory of the season.
“We suffered a disappointing result against Kansas and we will be looking to readdress that when play Real Salt Lake tomorrow(SAT),” added Smith.
“But the team is delighted with the way the season is progressing and we are looking to put some space between us and the sides below.
“Despite their recent record we can’t afford to take Real Salt Lake lightly because you don’t just roll over teams in the MLS.
