Berkeley Foundation to host auction
Valuable Bermuda cedar, paintings by local artists, the chance to meet Tiger Woods and a jazz party featuring one of the Island’s best-known musicians are among the unusual items on offer at an auction this weekend.
The F.S. Furbert Charity Auction is being held at the Berkeley Institute tomorrow [NOTE]SAT[\NOTE] at 6 p.m. to raise money for the school.
The event has been organised by the Berkeley Foundation and is named in honour of a former principal of the school.
William Spriggs, from the foundation, said it was hoped that at least $60,000 would be raised for school projects. “We hope to make this an annual event,” he said. “We have a number of corporate donors and individuals who have supported us.
“Tickets are selling well. We have some great items, great paintings by local artists and a great selection of Bermuda cedar.”
Saxophonist Shine Hayward, a Berkeleyite, has pledged to perform at a personal jazz party for the highest bidder for his services. There is also a package donated by an anonymous benefactor for the golf Grand Slam on the Island later this year, including three nights at the Fairmont Southampton.
Maxine Esdaille, event chairwoman, said: “There is an opportunity to be in the hospitality tent for that, so you may get the opportunity to hobnob with Tiger Woods. We have a number of wild pieces up for auction! It’s going to be fun.”
Items can be previewed in the Berkeley Institute atrium today between 5 and 8 p.m. To buy tickets for the auction — priced $25 per person or $40 per couple — call 337-0830, email wspriggs[AT]berkeley.bm or visit Fine Things on Queen Street.
