Young people prepare for youth summit

More than 150 young people are expected at a team-building event tomorrow ahead of Bermuda Youth Summit 2007.

Those present, aged from nine to 16, will take part in a holistic nature walk from Botanical Gardens to Crow Lane, before an afternoon-long brainstorming meeting at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

It is in preparation for the Sight and Sound Youth Summit, created by and for Bermuda’s youth to discuss the opportunities and challenges that are shaping their future, due to take place at the Berkeley Institute Cafetorium in the third week of September.

The summit will involve about 1,000 people, mainly youths, but also representatives from business, labour, post-secondary and training institutions and Government. It is designed to make Bermuda a better place for young people to live, work and build strong futures.

Duval Spencer, one of the organisers, said issues facing youths which need to be tackled include violence, bullying, marginalising and race.

“There’s a lot of issues, and the question is: how do you resolve them?” said Mr. Spencer. “We are going to need a whole network of people coming together.

“This is a channel for kids to vent and view and see how they can resolve their issues going forward.”

Mr. Spencer said the walk would give youngsters the chance to see the value of green space around them and appreciate sights such as the tree of remembrance natural monument at Botanical Gardens.

The walk starts from 11 a.m. at the South Road entrance of Botanical Gardens; the session at BUEI runs from about 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, log on to www.youth-summit.wikispaces.com
