Improvements to a road crossing outside a primary school where a little girl was fatally knocked down should be completed this month.

Six-year-old Tyaisha Cox died in hospital after being struck by a car on a crosswalk outside Purvis Primary School in Warwick in 2003. A court hearing later heard that the road layout was a major factor in the accident.

School principal Judith Alexander said last week that the school was still waiting for signs and red lines to be put in place to warn drivers that they needed to slow down.

"Ever since a child was killed they have been promising it and we just haven't received it yet," she said. "For the peace of mind of parents and teachers and children, it's something we are really looking forward to getting."

Works and Engineering Permanent Secretary Derrick Binns said: "All that remains is the work associated with the installation of the red, anti-skid material on the roadway and associated signage.

"We expect the material to be on Island by early next week. Installation should then be completed within two weeks following the arrival of the material."
