Bermuda slump to heavy defeat

Bermuda Under-19s thrashing at the hands of Canada leaves their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread. The eight-wicket defeat means that they cannot afford to lose another of their ICC Americas matches in Florida this week, and the encounter against USA on Friday is likely to determine who joins the Canadians at the World Cup global qualifiers in Ireland in July.First though they need to get past Bahamas today, and after a narrow win over Cayman, and yesterday’s hammering, even that isn’t a foregone conclusion.Against Canada, the under-19s were on the back foot almost from the start, and the fact that the 23 extras Canada conceded was the highest score of the innings said everything.Bermuda’s batsmen had no answer to their opponents’ bowling attack, with Kevon Fubler’s 18 off 49 balls the second highest score next to extras.Maninder Aulakh did much of the damage for Canada, taking four wickets for 23 runs from his 8.3 overs. The opening bowler ripped through the Bermuda top order, as David Moore’s side collapsed to 37 for four inside 13 overs.Fubler and Tre Manders briefly stopped the rot, grinding out 23 valuable runs in 12 overs, before Manders (9) was bowled by Jobanjot Sidhu. That was as good as it got for Bermuda, from 60 for five, they collapsed to 69 for nine, with the last three of those wickets all falling without a run being scored.Lateef Trott (10) offered a glimmer of resistance at the very end before he too was bowled by Aulakh.Chasing 88 was never likely to pose too many problems for Canada’s batsmen, although spinners Joshua Gilbert and Shaquille Jones made them work for their runs, conceding just 49 runs from 17 overs. If anything Canada are likely to be disappointed that the margin of victory wasn’t greater, at 83 without loss, opener Akass Shah (52) was out caught and bowled to Fubler, and opening partner Nikil Dhutta (24) fell in the same manner to Manders an over later. The wickets were never anything more than a consolation though, and Canada eventually won with 20.2 overs to spare.
